AI has its roots in all sectors and the education sector is experiencing its benefits, but the implementation of AI depends on the educational institutions.

FREMONT, CA: Artificial intelligence is ubiquitous and is adopted in almost all sectors. According to a research firm Gartner, the adoption of AI is 270 percent more than the past four years, and approximately 37 percent of organizations have adopted AI in some form. A report by Technavio predicts approximately 48 percent growth in AI tools over the next three years. The rapid development and uptake of AI solutions have created an environment where companies oversell AI abilities to keep up with the competition.  For AI to be successful, it has to be specific. AI has to define the needs it can meet and the shortcomings it can address. The need for specificity is essential for K-12 institutions as they have limited time and budgets.    

The rules for using AI in schools have not been written. Tech giants such as IBM and Google have come up with their AI initiatives for the education sector to deliver personalized learning strategies and analytics-based performance insight. However, it depends on the K-12 institutions to leverage these tools. The most common concerns regarding AI are human bias and overall accuracy. Experts believe that the system can be wrong 10, 20, or 40 percent of the time, which makes them an excellent supplemental tool, but not their replacements.

The increasing use of AI in schools raises ethical questions. Service providers must consider the type of data collected, how it is used, and the controls in place to protect student privacy. Additionally, administrators are worried about the impact of AI on human staffing. Before allowing access to student data, the schools must define the positive outcome of the solutions. Automation is the simplest benefit of AI as it streamlines tasks such as grading, timetable scheduling, or digital asset categorization. Educators can actively engage with students more.     

To provide personalized learning solutions for students, AI solutions are capable of integrating with other IT initiatives such as smart technology and IoT-driven networks. According to Pew Research data, 95 percent of teens have a smartphone, and 45 percent are always online. AI in schools can help students get accustomed to technological changes. The adoption of AI in education is on the rise, but the future of AI depends on broader application capable of adaptively applying practical intelligence.
